Sammy, the Banana Slug
The UC Santa Cruz chose to name their mascot Sammy, the Banana Slug, a mollusk that has no shell and common around the redwood forests in California. School officials wanted to change their mascot to something more appropriate and had chosen the sea lion. However, the students preferred the soft yellow and slimy slug, which they said had no predators.
