Karimov is the only known leader of his country up until his death. He has served as the country’s president for a very long time, holding on to his power without clear opposition. He has used the military to invoke fear and anxiety among political opponents. He has been suspected of money laundering. His government was also extremely corrupt and a huge chunk of the country’s population lives in poverty.
